Accessing LSS Shares from IDAS
On this page:
Introduction
What is LSS?
The https://research.its.uiowa.edu/our-services/storage-services/large-scale-storage-lss service provides low-cost, high-volume collaborative storage space for research data.
For more information about LSS, including the request form, costs, and data classification, please see: https://research.its.uiowa.edu/our-services/storage-services/large-scale-storage-lss
Can I use LSS with IDAS?
LSS is a separate technological service from the https://research.its.uiowa.edu/our-services/computing-services/interactive-data-analytics-service-idas. To support research collaboration, our team enabled mounting LSS shares in the IDAS research instance.
This article provides general information about LSS shares, with the goal of aiding IDAS users who want to use LSS with IDAS for their research. Certain LSS shares might have more complicated configurations. If you have questions, please https://research.its.uiowa.edu/contact-us.
Accessing LSS shares from the research instance in IDAS
1. Log in to the IDAS research instance. When you log in, you can choose to mount your LSS share. Please see step 6e in this article for more details: Accessing IDAS for Research Use | Logging in to the Research instance on IDAS
2. After your IDAS session has started, the contents of the LSS share will be available in the LSS folder in your IDAS home directory.
View from JupyterLab:
Double click on the LSS folder to open it. In this example, the LSS share grudderham is mounted as a folder inside the LSS folder.
View from RStudio:
Click on the LSS folder to open it. In this example, the LSS share grudderham is mounted as a folder inside the LSS folder.
3. If you want to access the contents of the LSS share from the command line or in your code in IDAS, the path is:
~/LSS/share-name
where ~ denotes your IDAS home directory, and share-name is the name of your LSS share.
For example, you can use Python code to read the test.csv file in the LSS share grudderham, mounted in IDAS, as below:
import pandas as pd
df = pd.read_csv("~/LSS/grudderham/test.csv")
Checking LSS storage usage on IDAS
To check how much LSS storage is available on IDAS, follow the following steps:
1. Open the Terminal in IDAS
If you are using JupyterLab, click the Terminal tile under Other in your JupyterLab page:
If you are using RStudio, click on the Terminal tab, which is next to the Console tab in RStudio:
2. In the Terminal, run the following command:
df -h ~/LSS/share-namewhere share-name is the name of your LSS share.
For example, the following output shows that the LSS share grudderham has a quota of 1TB. Of the quota, 3.4GB is used, and 1021GB is available:
grudderham@idas-research-grudderham:~$ df -h ~/LSS/grudderham
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
.../Shared/grudderham 1.0T 3.4G 1021G 1% /home/grudderham/LSS/grudderhamFAQs
How do I use LSS with IDAS?
If you have access to an LSS share, you can mount your LSS share in your IDAS research session.
After logging in to IDAS, the contents of your LSS share will be available in the
LSSfolder in IDAS.You can use your LSS share and IDAS account in several possible ways, such as:
You can store your research data in your LSS share and use the computing tools in IDAS to analyze your data.
After using IDAS to work with your research data, you can store analysis results in your LSS share.
You can mount your LSS share on your local computer. After your LSS share has been mounted on your computer, you can move files from your LSS share to other folders on your computer as needed.
Do I have to request that my LSS share be accessible from IDAS?
