The June 30 - July 5, 2023 maintenance has been cancelled.
The maintenance was originally scheduled so that we could migrate the home directories of IDAS research users to a new storage system. During our pre-maintenance testing process, we discovered issues that need additional time to resolve. The maintenance was cancelled to avoid unnecessary disruptions to users’ work.
What does this mean for IDAS users?
- No service down time during June 30 – July 5, 2023
- No change to users’ home directories
Our team will revisit the migration of home directories in the following months. Future work and maintenance will be announced by emails and on the ITS service page. Select calendar view to view maintenance that is scheduled more than a week in advance.
Information About the Update
1. What is the change?
- From 5 pm Friday, June 30 to 8 am Wednesday July 5, 2023, our team will migrate the home directories of IDAS research users to a new storage system.
2. Whom will be affected?
- IDAS will be down for maintenance from 5 pm Friday, June 30 to 8 am Wednesday July 5, 2023.
- Research users:
- Home directories of current IDAS research users will be moved to a new system. Users will not notice any difference after the migration. All file paths will remain the same. No data loss will occur.
- If an account is inactive (for example, the user has left the University of Iowa), their home directory will get archived. If the account becomes active again later (for example, the user renews their appointment with the University), the user can contact our team at research-computing@uiowa.edu to discuss moving their home directory to the new storage system.
- Classroom users:
- Home directories of classroom users will not be moved. However, IDAS will be unavailable due to maintenance during the above time.
- Please note: per our policy, IDAS class instances only lasts for the duration of the class. At the end of each semester, we routinely deprovision (remove) old class instances in order to prepare resources for a new semester. For more information about downloading data from your class accounts, please see Class Accounts at the End of the Semester.
- If there are issues with the migration of a user's home directory, our team will contact that specific user to discuss the issues.
3. Why do we make this change?
Moving IDAS home directories to the new storage system has several benefits:
- The new storage system will give more consistent performance than the system currently used by IDAS.
- Moving IDAS home directories to the new system will free up compute resources for IDAS users.
- The new storage system will help streamline future maintenance.
